Event Review: Rapperholic is now a rap music festival

If you where around for Sarkodie’s earliest moments in the Ghanaian music industry, you would have the butterflies in the tummy the moment he bowed down to Obrafour.

Such an iconic picture that is such that the picture could well become music folklore in 2, 3 and more generations to come.

The genesis of the story behind the picture will be surely traced back to the 2009 song ‘HipLife’ by Obrafour which featured Sarkodie.  He clearly tells everyone that he is handing over his kingship to Sarkodie.

Years down the line the guy he crowned bowed down to him. Enough of the picture from Rapperholic, let us tell you why this show is well on its way to becoming a festival which will require a much bigger space.

KiDi

Firstly, the scenes of bad crowd control and congestion at the gates isn’t one that should happen at any event again in this country.  It’s basic that when more humans are gathered at a place its difficult to control them so the best thing to always do is to allow a seamless stream of people from gates into the hall.

Gathering them all at the gates to later do some stuff would always cause commotion.

And that was what took the shine off the Rapperholic. Forget the kneeling down picture of Sarkodie you saw, the scenes before the show started could have degenerated into something that the organisers wouldn’t have wanted.

The stage and sound were well on point throughout the event with only the microphone proving to be the black spot.

Obrafour & Sarkodie

As it always happens with Ghanaian events, one microphone has to stop working in the middle of a speech or performance. It might well boil down to just technology failing us or some other weird conspiracy theories.

The concert in itself was a blast! Patrons had fun as they were treated to stunning performances from every act that came on stage.

No one could pinpoint one performance that wasn’t well appreciated, even b4Bonah who got some negative reception at the December 2 Remember concert was well received. Kwesi Arthur, King Promise, KiDi & Kuame Eugene put of energy filled moments that assured everyone that the future of Ghana music is fabulous.

Shatta Wale

The electrified screamed and cheered when the official mc, Shatta Wale, came on stage. the dancehall artist was a delight to listen to and watch.

Shatta Wale bossed the event! his appearance in smart clothes laced with African Prints is another headline for another day.

His hilarious pick on Asamoah Gyan drew hearty laughter all round. Before the money-throwing fever caught the VVIPs, Sarkodie had churned out a high-octane performance that had the crowd on their fee; the whole time.

When even the Sarkcess signees, Akwaboah & Strongman performed slow heartfelt tunes, the audience was still charged up. Sarkodie’s initiative to introduce artist mid of his performances hasn’t got a superlative to describe it.

Sarkodie swashbuckled through hot tune after hot tune during his time on stage. The Highest cheer of the night would undoubtably be when Sarkodie got Obrafour on stage.  This was after the crowd had cheered to the three female rappers that got on stage to freestyle.

Freda Rhymes, Feli Nuna and Eno were up to task when they delivered flows that will be remembered as one of the hallmarks of the 2017 Rapperholic concert.

The Rapperholic concert has outgrown the venue it was hosted in and as such the organising team should look for a much bigger alternative to the AICC come 2018. The Accra Stadium is an option
