I’ve DJ’d in the biggest night club in West Africa – DJ Ashmen

He has recently been nominated in the upcoming Ghana DJ Awards.

Renowned Ghanaian disc Jockey, Michael Mensah Ashley popularly known as DJ Ashmen, got up close in an exclusive interview with Ghanamusic.com.

He was nominated for the Best International Mixtape DJ of 2012 at the Official Mixtape Awards in 2013 and has recently been nominated in the upcoming Ghana DJ Awards.

He revealed that his love for the career started as a hobby with the help of his cousin and some radio presenters he used to listen on radio back in the days.

On the issue of whether or not he had the unlikely support of his parents in venturing into what some ignorant people would term as a ‘not-too-prestigious’ career, he opined, “My mum and dad are music lovers and the likes of Fiifi Pratt, Azigiza, KOD, Bibi Menson, among others inspired me.

My parents were in full support because I combined it with schooling so they were cool. After schooling I took it to a different level by playing at clubs, lounges and then radio”.

Everybody has a first time at what they are great at. Most people are granted platforms by others to show what they’ve got but that was not the case for DJ Ashmen.

He disclosed, “My first time on a major stage was about 15 yrs ago. It was a street carnival hosted by myself and some couple of friends which featured the likes of KK Fosu, Akwaboah, 2toff, Mad fish, Tinny and others”.

In reminiscing some of his wildest achievements so far, he recounted playing for thousands of people at last year’s Bliss on the Hills at Kwahu Abetifi with Jamaican Reggae superstar, Tarrus Riley, including our own acts such as Sarkodie, Samini, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.

He also stated DJing at the biggest night club in West Africa situated at Kwahu- Rockcity.

“At the moment I’m working on my compilation with some unsung artists and some couple of known artistes”, he exclusively announced.

Commenting on his latest nomination in the upcoming Ghana DJ Awards, he retorted, “I’m not really expecting anything exceptional. May the night of the awards be good for all DJs in Ghana and give us a good image across the globe”.

He finally adviced the myriads of youths that look up to him to believe in themselves and build an image for themselves for others to follow.
