Ras Caleb injuncts MUSIGA elections amidst postponement

The Elections Committee of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), has once again rescheduled their impending elections for new executives to Wednesday, July 17 after postponing it from June 26th to July 10th.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Elections Committee, Smart Nkansah, MUSIGA revealed that the decision was to allow the Electoral Commission of Ghana, which would supervise the elections to complete its limited registration exercise, which is currently ongoing.

Mr Nkansah assured members of the Union of due diligence on the part of the Committee to ensure the elections are free and fair, devoid of any electoral malpractices.

The MUSIGA elections were initially scheduled for June 26 nationwide but was postponed because of what the committee says was a request for more time by the candidates to campaign.

In all eight candidates are contesting for the presidency, 1st and 2nd vice presidents and general secretary. Candidates for the three other positions – treasurer, organizer and welfare officer are going unopposed.

For the MUSIGA presidency, two legendary musicians, Bessa Simons, who has served as the National Vice President for the past eight years, is going against Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, who is the current President of the Greater Accra Region.

Meanwhile, Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, a presidential aspirant of the national executive elections of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), has through the High Court, sought to place an injunction on the elections.

In a press statement released by Ras Caleb, he stated that he is not happy about how election issues are handled by the Election Committee.

“As an aspirant, I have been watching the electioneering process with keen interest and I have come to the realisation that there are a lot of beaches in the electoral system especially from the roadmap to the current situation of the voter’s list/notice of musicians,” he wrote.

He added that he does not believe in the credibility of the current Voters Register that has been published.

“Upon long awaiting and pressure from members and aspirants, the list has been released by the election committee purporting to be the voter’s list/ register. I found this to be quite unfortunate if indeed this is what the election committee is going to rely on as voter’s register for this upcoming election,” he further stated.

In the writ of summons sighted by citinewsroom.com, he is seeking a declaration that the current Voters Register compiled by the Election Committee of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is not credible and same cannot in its flawed state be used for the conduct of the forthcoming 2019 National Executive Committee MUSIGA Elections to guarantee a fair and transparent outcome.

He also wants the Election Committee to “compile afresh an authentic and credible Voters Register.”

Gospel artiste, Rev. Dr Harry Thomas Yawson and CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richard Karikari Mensah, will contest for the 1st Vice President position.

Also going for the 2nd Vice President slot are Gospel artistes, Deborah Freeman and Ruth Benny Wood known in showbiz circles as Abena Ruthy.

Sylvia Bosompem Amponsah and Samuel Kofi Agyemang are contesting in the General Secretary race.

Gifty Ghansah is vying for the National Welfare Officer, with Rev. Edward Edusa-Eyison eyeing National Treasurer position. Chizzy Nii Adu Wailer is standing for the position of National Organiser.
