Improper reconciliations postponed elections -MUSIGA rep

The Business Development and Membership Director of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Richmond Adu-Poku, has in an interview with ghanamusic.com explained the reason for the sudden postponing of the much-anticipated MUSIGA Elections.

In His own words he stated, “Because it is a national election and an increased number of people registered to vote, we have to do proper reconciliations for clarity and understanding by all the people involved”.

He further explained, “In my background checks let’s say if it is the Ashanti regional coordinator, I see that either 10 more people have been added to my list, or haven’t received their money or I don’t know them or they haven’t renewed their membership, so in order not make the candidates and parties involved feel like somebody has added something or done this or that, we thought it wise to do a proper reconciliation so that everybody is on the same page”.

He also admitted that it was due to the fact that this was their first time carrying out a nationwide election, as the previous ones were done only by the leaders.

He also confirmed that all the candidates were okay with decision and have agreed to the rescheduling of the election of national executives for the Union from June 26 to July 10.

This decision was taken at the meeting of the committee today. According to the chairman of the committee, Smart Nkansah, the decision is based on the feedback the committee has received from the initial release of the voters register for the elections.

He indicated that the Electoral Commission of Ghana (ECG) who would supervise the elections are currently engaged with the limited registration of voters for the national elections for 2020.

He has assured the members of the Union of due diligence on the part of the committee to ensure the elections are free and fair, devoid of any electoral malpractices.

The MUSIGA elections were scheduled for June 26 nationwide and it is the first time the Union is exercising the universal suffrage for all card bearing members to exercise their franchise.

In all eight candidates are contesting for the presidency, 1st and 2nd vice presidents and general secretary. Three other positions – treasurer, organizer and welfare officer are contested unopposed.
