Highlights of VGMA press conference: Stone; Shatta Banned

Story Highlights
  • Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy banned indefinitely
  • Stripped off of the already awarded plaques
  • Artiste of the Year and Most Popular Song of the Year cancelled

The just ended press conference by the board of the 20th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), has announced their decision on the fracas that unfolded at the event.

The two Dancehall artistes involved in the scuffle at the event on the 18th of May 2019, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, have been indefinitely banned and stripped off of the already awarded plaques they each got during the event.

Theresa Ayoade, CEO of Charterhouse Productions, organizers of the awards scheme, reiterated the necessity to look past the brouhaha and not downplay the other highlights of the event that added to the glitz, glam and appreciation of 20 years of real Ghanaian music talent.

She however stated that this would not cut off the ties they have with the artistes as Charterhouse Productions incase any client of theirs need the services of either Stonebwoy or Shatta Wale.

As to who deserves to be punished more than the other, as being debated upon on social media, Theresa emphasized that it’s not the decision of the VGMA board to take but that of the law court.

In this regard, there would be no Artiste of the Year and Most Popular Song of the Year for the 20th Anniversary edition of the VGMAs.

The VGMA board intentionally claimed not to have announced the two categories so as not to give the artistes and their fanbase the boasting rights of one winning over the other in any of the unannounced categories and further fueling their rivalry as those two awards were won by either of the two artistes in question.

They further explained that the indefinite ban meant that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were banned from being part of the nominations, selections and performances in subsequent VGMA events yet to be held in the coming years.

They made it clear that the ban had the tendency to be lifted, that’s why it was indefinite and it would be lifted only on the basis of observation of good character, demonstration of good behaviour at public events and the establishment of peace and unity between the two factions.
