Kaakie the dancehall queen of Ghana

Kaakie (Grace Kaki Awo Ocansey), apart from being one of the biggest female Dancehall artiste in Africa, she is also the very first female to combine a Nursing and Music careers.

She simply can be described as a pacesetter; being the first female in Africa to ever win a Reggae/Dancehall award, the first and only Ghanaian female artiste till date to be nominated for a Channel O Africa Music Awards with her nomination for Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall Video award – Channel O Africa Awards 2013, and the first and only Ghanaian female artiste till date to be selected & performed at Big Brother Africa, the number one reality TV show in Africa held in South Africa.

She has won 5 major awards already barely 2 years on the music scene – “Best New Artiste 2012” by Yfm 107.9 Ghana, “New Artiste of the Year” at Ghana Music Awards 2013, “Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year” award at the Ghana Music Awards 2013; “Best Female Vocalist” at BASS Awards 2013; and “Best Reggae & Dancehall Video of the Year” at MTN 4syte Music Video Awards 2013.

Also she was picked as the “Female Artiste of the Year” in Ghana by Joy 99.7 FM in a public survey and won several radio/ public choice awards in Ghana, Nigerian, Kenya and Liberia as well.

Generally, it is very rare to find a female musician doing Dancehall in Africa or from Africa. But as in the case of Kaakie, she has stepped on the scene as not only Ghana’s first female act to take Dancehall to the international stage but as well, on the records, Africa’s first female Dancehall artiste who has gained international prominence within a short period of just 16 months.

Kaakie’s songs by the records are on heavy rotation by DJs and Radio Stations across USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Sweden, Lebanon, Israel and a lot more. Most importantly is the core fan base Kaakie commands in these countries.

Already, she has shared big stages with international artistes such as Keri Hilson, Bow Wow, Busy Signal, Demarco, Movado, Kiprich, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Brymo, M.I, Samini, Sarkodie, R2Bees and a host of others.  Kaakie aka “Queen Diva”, “Dancehall Queen” has performed on prominent stages such as “Mavado Live In Ghana Concert’’, “Ghana Rocks Concert 2011”, “A Night Of 1013 Laughs”, ‘‘Resolution 2012 Concert – featuring Busy Signal & Kiprich”, “Vodafone Ghana Music Awards”, “Stand Up GH Concert – featuring Keri Hilson & Bow Wow”, “Ghana Meets Naija 2012 Concert”,  “Demarco Live In Ghana Concert”,  and the Big Brother Africa eviction show in South Africa.

She wrapped up her nationwide tour few months ago – dubbed Kaakit Up Tour, affording her the opportunity to pursue a cause she has always been passionate about and which underlies her reason to pursue Nursing – helping to reduce Maternal Mortality. Running side by side the tour is Kaakie’s Maternal Mortality Awareness Campaign.

The campaign is not only being limited to visiting maternal Units of major hospitals and making donations but starting off conversations that create awareness about Maternal Mortality.

Over the past 9 months, Kaakie has been holding huge concerts in several African countries to connect with her numerous fans; Gabon (sold out concert 3 times within 2 months – average over 7000 in attendance) Zimbabwe (Guest artiste – Music Festival), Cote d’ivoire  – (sold out concert 5300 in attendance) (Togo – sold out concert – 1500 in attendance). There are plans underway to Tour East Africa (Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, and Tanzania especially) in the coming months.

Kaakie has just finished her new studio album and has started releasing new songs ahead of the launch. (Give It To Me – just released on 10-Oct-15 and it’s already a massive hit in several countries).
