For the fourth consecutive year (since 2008), Rebecca Acheampong aka Becca would be performing at the Ghana Music Awards night.

On 9th April, 2011, she would be the first artist to be on the GMA performance bill for that number of times consecutively; and her consistency "really has nothing to do with a hit song", Hi Newspaper source within the Planning Committee hints.

"In its 12th year, the Ghana Music Awards are cutting down on 'just ordinary' performances that only go to drag the event unnecessarily and opting for only money's-worth acts on the stage.

This year, the committee decided to select performers based on their total act and mass appeal", our source hinted.

"In our part of the world, event goers pay only to dance to popular songs; elsewhere, real show goers pay to appreciate acts making artistes put up spellbinding performances; we want to use Ghana Music Awards to do that", our source says, adding that, artists such as Becca, Efya and Samini who put up world-class performances needed to be encouraged with platforms like the GMA.

According to the source, who prefers to keep name under wraps, this year's bill was not just constituted with only artistes with hit songs on their minds. "We sought out to look for artistes who can give the event attendees value for their money".

A justifiable stances giving that, at the 2010 BET Awards, the first artiste to perform was Kanye West who hadn't had a hit song in a year. The song he performed was a new song which hadn't been played on air before.

The song, "Power", went on to become the biggest hip hop hit of 2010 and he didn't shoot a video for it because his BET performance was so memorable, TV stations didn't need a prompting to show it.

(Next week, Hi Newspaper and www.myhiworld.com will bring you an exclusive preview of the GMA performances and our editors' picks on who wins and who losses.)
