Fans of the eclectic afro-pop/hip-hop artist, Wanlov, should look forward to a new film featuring himself and talented rapper/writer/producer, Mensa. ‘Cause of Money’ is a pidgin musical which features singing, rapping and amazing choreographies. Without giving much away, Wanlov describes the film as ‘Big’. Perhaps, it would be Africa’s take on productions such as MTV’s Carmen: Hiphopera.
Wanlov is also working on his second album as well as other collaboraption projects; and plans to tour Ghana and the rest of Africa. “We are going to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. We are walking and driving all the way there”. Certainly there are exciting moments ahead for Wanlov and his fans all over the globe. However, the artist is not too happy with his nominations in the upcoming Ghana Music Awards.
“I mean I am not happy but I am happy at the same time because I did what I felt in my heart and I got some recognition for it. Some people would do something different and not gain any recognition at all because it is a challenge to the people who like putting things in boxes. The industry may be able to catch up with what we are doing next year but we are not going to modify anything to fit into one of these boxes.”
He finds the nomination of his hit song, ‘Kokonsa’ for hip-hop song of the year a bit weird and feels that the song was more hiplife than most of the songs nominated in the hiplife song of the year category. “Even my song ‘Smallest Time’ is more hip-hop than ‘Kokonsa’. Kokonsa should have been nominated for hiplife or afro-pop. By Reggie Rockstone or Pidgin Music’s definition of hiplife, Kokonsa is more hiplife than what is called hiplife now.”
Wanlov would however love for his effort to be rewarded at the Ghana Music Award ceremony, particularly in the discovery of the year category. ‘If I do take the discovery of the year award that would be nice but I was discovered or I discovered myself a long time ago. So it is not somebody else that would validate me but the cash would be nice!”?
