Music trio, 4x4 who missed out narrowly on the Artiste of the Year award at Saturday’s VGMAs, have praised the ultimate winner Sarkodie, saying he truly deserves it.
Tema based rapper, Sarkodie beat off competition from 4x4, Becca, Okyeame Kwame, Efya, R2Bees, and Kwaw Kese to win the coveted prize in music for the second time after winning it in 2010.
Pundits were tipping 4x4 to win the award this year considering their performance during the calendar year of the awards, releasing an album which had three hit songs, a good video to match and also performing at almost all major shows held during the past year.
But speaking in an interview with Myjoyonline.com after the awards, which came off at the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre, Captain Planet, leader of 4x4 who also bagged two awards - Album of the year and Group of the year – on the night said they were not cheated.
“I don’t think we have been cheated I think we have gotten what we deserve and we are so content with the two awards,” he indicated, adding that they hold no qualms about the choice of the winner.
Captain Planet explained that although they did a great job during the past year, “at the end of the day he [Sarkodie] was the one with the [most] votes. We were all in that category and we all deserve to win and he won so it means he is the winner of the Artiste of the Year and that’s a decision from the public and Charter House.”
In spite of the loss, the trio - Jeff Sylvanus Dodji (Captain Planet), Russel Edem Avornyoh (CoDed) and Prince Tamakloe (Fresh Prince) - believe that the event “was free and fare,” although they were nominated in seven categories of which they won two.
Captain Planet revealed that they are set to release two singles soon and hope to annex the Artiste of the Year award next year.
