The musicians’ body shortly after President Mills’ death, on July 24, released a tribute song, titled Yedi Awreho (We are mourning), which features some renowned musicians including, Rex Omar, Amakye Dede, Kojo Antwi, Samini, Obour, Okyeame Kwame, Black Rasta, and Cecilia Marfo, to his memory. Last Friday, members of the musicians’ union led by its President met with President John Mahama to mourn with him and also presented a copy of the song and its video to him.
The MUSIGA President, popularly known as Obour disclosed in an interview with Myjoyonline.com that proceeds from the sale of copies of the song will be presented to the wife of the late President, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, to donate to any charity of her choice.
According to Obour, the musicians’ body’s initial plan was not to sell the song but due to the huge demand for copies of the song, they decided to sell it adding, “proceeds from the sale of this album will go into a special charity of the late President’s wife. Together with Mrs. Naadu Mills we would donate these proceeds to a charity of her choice.”
“As MUSIGA we are looking at ways to make his memory last in the minds of Ghanaians … we’ve done an All Star Tribute song that has the...every top musician in Ghana. It is for people who want to own a music that was done with him in memory,” he explained.
He said apart from the song; members of the Union were holding a three-day tribute concert in honour of the late President who died at age 68.
The concert which kicked off on Wednesday, August 8 will hold till Friday, August 10 at the Trade Fair Centre car park and it will see bigwigs in Ghanaian music taking stage to thrill the hundreds of fans who throng the venue.
Some of the names billed to perform include, Amakye Dede, Tic Tac, Okyeame Kwame, Nana Aboagye Da-Costa and Nana Tuffour. Thursday’s event will be dedicated to three musical genres, gospel, hi-life and hiplife.
Obour hinted that, they may organize a similar concert next year to mark the one year anniversary of President Mills’ death.
