Obour builds library in Upper East

On the 12th of September 2009, a team from Youth Icons Ghana travelled up north to the Upper East region, specifically to the Bongo District with the sole mission of going to cut sod for the commencement of the construction of the first library. Watch ABC (Ghana Reads campaign) by Obour

A grand durbar of the chiefs and people of Bongo was held in Zorko, a village on the Ghana-Burkina Faso boarder where the Bongo Naba had earmarked for the construction of the library. Sod was cut by the ambassador for the Ghana Reads Campaign -Obour supported by the Bongo Nana and the Executive Director of Youth Icons Ghana.

The sod cutting ceremony was also attended by the District Chief Executive of Bongo. As of December 2009, the building had gotten to the lentel level. Official commissioning is scheduled for April 2010. They are now shifting focus to the Assin Bosomade in the central region of Ghana where the next library would be constructed.

Running parallel to the construction of community libraries is the extensive promotion of  a culture of reading among Ghanaians especially children using music as a key tool. A musical documentary has already been produced and running on national television extolling the virtues of reading and importance of education.
