Multichoice Ghana, on behalf of MNet and Channel O, donated a fully installed HD PVR decoder for Rita Marley, the wife of the late Bob Marley as a sign of support after the ultra-modern music recording studio she was building in Aburi in the Eastern Region had been gutted by fire recently.
The cause of the fire is unknown but sources close to Mrs. Marley say it may have been caused by an electrical fault.
The multi-million-dollar studio - also the store house of most of Bob Marley’s original tapes - was due for commissioning late last year but the event had to be postponed to allow Mrs. Marley to attend to some personal issues in the USA, sources say.
The incident is perhaps one of the most tragic happenings to have rocked the reggae world as, according to sources, the studio was going to be one of the great symbols of the Rastafarian fraternity.
Rita Marley established the Rita Marley Foundation and set out to carry on the legacy of her late, great, husband, Bob Marley by creating a recording studio. It has been almost ten years in the making, but undoubtedly a labour of love rather than a labour of necessity.
The studio was being fine tuned to soon play host to the world's most renowned entertainers, while offering West African artists, a world class studio from which to launch their works.
Mrs. Marley also established a Health Care Center in the same village as her villa. She plans to promote wellness through a sound practice of living. The center will serve as a respite to those in the village.
MNet recently broadcast a documentary on DStv on the legend Bob Marley, as part of its African Stories for African month, and it seemed only fitting that a gesture of support be made by the two channels that promote African music and music influenced by Bob Marley, across the continent.
The hardware was received by Ritas’s daughter, Sharon, on behalf of the family and she said “ it is so heartwarming to see that there is so much love for Bob Marley and the Marley family”.
Channel O supports local artistes by flighting their videos on a continental platform. Artistes should contact the Multichoice office to pick up a release form and to submit their videos.
Channel O can be found on channel 320 on DStv and MNet is on channel 102 on DStv. DStv recently launched 4 High Definition channels on channel 170 [MNet HD], 171 [SuperSport HD], 172 [Discovery HD] and 173 [ i-concert HD].
