Lucky Mensah: Enkoyie - not targeted at President Mills

High-Life musician Lucky Mensah has been in the news for some time now for his latest work, Enkoyie, which many say is directed at the Mills government and the current state of the country.

The song paints a picture of Lucky Mensah going through hardships under an unbearable economy.

Prior to the 2008 general elections, Mensah composed a song, “Come to NDC” for the National Democratic Congress, then in opposition. That act held him in the eyes of many as a member of the NDC.

The ace musician speaking on Day Break Hitz on Hitz FM with Lexis Bill Friday, said the song is not targeted at the siting president, Prof. J.E.A. Mills, rather, he was addressing his own clan head (Abusuapanyin) on issues and problems at home.

He said the Enkoyie song is a wake-up call to people at the helm of affairs in any given field of endeavour calling on them to be responsible and dedicated to their work.

Lucky indicated that if he had wanted to talk about the president, he would have mentioned his name in the song and that when he composed the political song for the then presidential aspirant, John Evans Atta Mills, he mentioned his name in the song.

Lucky Mensah distanced himself from politics saying he is a musician who is opened to do business with all irrespective of political or business links, stating that his doors are always opened to all.

Lucky, born Alex Lucky Mensah, said the music industry is currently going through turbulent times culminating in a drop in the business of music production. That notwithstanding, he said good songs sell.

He bemoaned the poor sales, a situation he attributed to the low patronage of musical works and piracy, adding that DJs also fail to play High-life music which he said is the authentic form of Ghanaian music.

Lucky has been in the industry for 17 years and has seveeral albums to his credit, including Nsawa Bo released in 1993, Glory to the Lord in 1994, Wope a Hwe, 1995, Agooji Baby in 2001, Brofre Nie in 2002, Aduu Sumo Akwadu in 2004, Old School in 2005, Bottom of My Heart in 2006, and I Miss You released in 2008.

He is set to release his next, Nkrato, next week.
