Can we call giants in Radio and leave him out? Meet persona Sammy Forson

“Radio started like this, I was in my early twenties, I had finished computer school and was installing computer programs, doing networking when I discovered radio softwares, PC DJ and the rest so I learnt how to use them on my own.

And one day I found my way to the microphone”, he said. His voice has a resonance that is instantly etched in your mind and dwells with you forever.

Starting off as an IT expert, his experience in computer software took him to Kumasi where he worked with GBC, installed their programs and trained their staff in the technicalities of radio equipments and softwares. “Back in my early school days I wanted to be a pilot, I never knew I was going to do radio”. As he tells his story, the enthusiasm on his face shows how contempt he is with what he does and his love for his art. His is a natural talent that has been refined by years of vast experience and learning.

Currently hooked up to Accra’s premium urban radio station, Sammy hosts the “Mid Morning Show with Sammy Forson” every week day from 9am to noon. Before he joined YFM, Sammy was one of Citi FM’s most impeccable assets. So what will motivate such a move? “I wouldn’t say there was a motivation, it was time for me to move on and I did”. I love Hip hop, I love R’n’B and somehow deep inside I knew there was a connection between me and YFM.I am young and I thought I fitted into the platform that YFM offered and that is why I joined”.

Capping his laurels the one man army recently spearheads the only local entertainment program on ETV GH, Exposure. “ETV GH belongs to Global Media Alliance, who also owns YFM, Happy FM, Silverbird stores and a host of other media outlets so having extra talent to put somewhere is highly encouraged. I already had some experience on TV3’s spotlight so I decided to give it a shot and so far so good”. A look at his childhood explains his versatility and his fathomless nature.

“20 years ago, I was this young, energetic guy in Zambia, who was crazy about his blue BMX bicycle with a lot of American and Indian friends because I lived in an Indian-American community, always riding, climbing mountains, hiking, going to the wild, eating bush meat, coming home late and getting spanked by Daddy. It was a totally different environment for me.” His childhood days complement his ability to mingle with everybody and yet not be alien to any culture. His personality is well endowed with diversity. Defining such personalities can be awkward and sometimes very stressful, so I let him do it himself.

“Sammy Forson is a simple guy.I believe in simplicity, life in itself is already complicated I don’t want to complicate it anymore. I respect my privacy a lot, besides radio I like to be on my own. I like listening to music, Music is my life. I can’t go a day without listening to music and I hate discrimination. I don’t get swollen headed because I have been on the rough sides of life before and one of my core values is “do unto others what you want others to do unto you” and that is my philosophy”.

One hell of a self definition, but if you ever meet the man you will bear him out and realize that the definition he attests to himself couldn’t be far from wrong. Sammy literally lives in a world of his own, one that is devoid of intentional evil and diabolic manipulations. The humor side of his well diversified personality is brought to bear as he gives an answer to the question are you single or attached?

“For the moment I have met somebody, I can’t say we are dating but maybe by the time you will be writing your story, we will have started dating. You know we live in a Bluetooth era so I will just have to Bluetooth some feelings and make it happen”. The radio mogul is not only well vexed in the elements of radio but also derives some attention in areas of artiste management, advertising and marketing.

He is great a person to be with and I love every bit of our conversation. Telling his story in a single piece will be a disaster and an utter disrespect to the dignity of his personality. I live to tell the rest of his story.
