Kwame Nsiah Apau, known in showbiz as Okyeame Kwame has initiated a project aimed at supporting high school students to attain higher heights in life.

The project, known as ‘Okyeame Kwame for Higher Learning’, would see him moving from school to school to empower the students and financially support the needy ones among them.

In an exclusive interview with Beatwaves at his residence in Accra, the music star also known as the Rap Doctor indicated that the project was very dear to his heart and that he was very determined to make it a success. About how he was going to fund it, Okyeame Kwame told Beatwaves he would use proceeds from the sale of his new album to support the project.

The new album, titled ‘M’anwensem’ (my poetry) has 14 tracks. He mentioned ‘Woso’, ‘Medomaa’, ‘Tuutuu’ and ‘Owuo akyi’ as some of the hit songs on it. Watch Video: Woso (Remix) by Okyeame Kwame feat. Richie

The Rap Doctor mentioned Samini, Kwabena Kwabena, Brothers, Kofi B, Wutah, and Morris Baby Face as some of the artistes featured in the album.

Okyeame Kwame said he named the album “my poetry” because of the kind of songs on it, as the music has been arranged in stanzas just as poetry. It also contains similes and metaphors together with all the emotions that go with poetry.

He added that another major reason he brought out the new album was to help change the mindset of Ghanaians about musicians. According to the Rap Doctor, Ghanaians consider musicians as a bunch of school dropouts and street guys who have no history or future. He said he hopes to use his new album to correct the wrong perception society has about musicians as people who had dropped out of school and had found music as alternative for survival.

He called on Ghanaians to see musicians as professionals who do what they are good at, just like any other professionals.

Okyeame Kwame who is currently studying Modern Languages at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) said he hopes to further obtain a Ph.D, when asked what was next for him after acquiring his degree.

He stated that he believes in himself as the best because of the greater effort he puts in his album coupled with the unique style he gives to every album he comes out with.

About his love life, the Rap Doctor said he is currently engaged to beautiful Yaa Agyeiwaa, a graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon who is currently pursuing an MBA at KNUST.

“Yaa and I are doing pretty good and plans are far advanced to tie the knot,” he said.

As his personal contribution to Ghana music, Okyeame Kwame mentioned that he has a tall list of young musicians who he is currently helping to come out with albums. This he hopes to achieve by being their producer.

The first group he produced involved his brothers, who go by the name Brodez and are still under his tutelage. Also under the Rap Doctor’s tutelage is Rose of Mentor I fame, Dilute, a third year student of the University of Ghana, AJ, the first ever hiplife artiste who raps in the Bono language, and a lot more.

However, Okyeame Kwame just like all other musicians is not enthused at all about the manner in which the music industry was being handled in Ghana. According to him, the structures are simply not there for the ordinary musician to build on, and the Government does not seem to be concerned, adding that the situation is more like the survival of the fittest.

What Okyeame Kwame hopes to achieve by releasing this album is to take Ghana music to the outside world using his connections. This according to him could be achieved by doing what he calls ‘futuristic songs’ like what he has just done; his latest album, he indicated, looks more into the future.

He called on his fans to continue supporting him and other musicians and urged them to seek knowledge and use it to the benefit of society.

Okyeame Kwame revealed that in future he hopes to release more political songs, which according to him, would keep the Government on its toes and make it realize the importance of the musician, who society cannot do without.
