An award that goes beyond the limit to reward creativity and originality is the MOBO Awards. This year’s edition will come on October 16th 2008 in according to a release from the event organizers.
This year’s ceremony despite the venue and nominees list not out yet will be graced by superstars whom have done a lot in the industry at large; they will include Amy Winehouse, T-Pain, Shaggy, Jamelia and Quentin Tarantino.
The Music Of Black Origin, MOBO Awards, established in 1996 by Kanya King MBE, are held annually in the UK to recognize artists of any race or nationality performing music of black origin. Controversy has surrounded the name of the awards since it’s out set. Some people argue that styles of music cannot be linked to skin color in any useful way.
The history of music shows that people of different races have influenced both ‘black’ and ‘white’ music especially in music such as jazz or rock and roll.
The awards has over the years brought huge fame to some very black artists which have made them now very popular around the world. The Best African Act is a category celebrates the contributions to the international music arena by African artists. Previous winners of this award include: Batman Samini from Ghana and 2face Idibia of Nigeria.
However, MOBO provides a platform for the development of black music and honours artists of all races, backgrounds and nationality. The awards have always been about the music, not the race of the artist. Furthermore, the success of the awards has allowed MOBO Organisation to award individuals and groups who make a positive contribution to society, through the BeMOBO Award.
The MOBO Awards was the first of its kind in Europe. The first ever award ceremony dedicated to Music Of Black Origin - the MOBO Organisation has helped pave the way for urban music in mainstream culture. The awards show many categories all of which consist of the most current, innovative, creative and exciting artists from all around the world.
Typically the 2004 Awards; The ninth annual MOBO Awards ceremony; took place on 30 September 2004 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and was broadcast by BBC television. Lisa Maffia was the only UK female artist to win an award. The 2007 awards broadcasted live on BBC 3 from the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London and hosted by Shaggy and Jamelia. Shaggy opened the evening with a medley of hits including “It Wasn’t Me”, “Mr Bombastic” and “Angel”.
Over the years seasoned artists have been awarded and the show has featured several other performances. In 2007 T-Pain performed on stage with Yung Joc whilst Craig David and Kano also collaborated on stage. Rising stars, Ne-Yo, Mutya Buena and Robin Thicke also wow-ed the crowds at the O2 with performances. Amy Winehouse performed two songs and accepted the award for Best UK Female. England cricketer, Monty Panesar and England footballer, Micah Richards were among a star studded line up of guests presenting individual awards which also boasts names including Sinnita and Quentin Tarantino.
