It was all drama when Kwaw Kesse stormed the offices of The Statesman newspaper last week Friday with his “Abodam” team in a failed bid to intimidate a reporter whom they had accused of writing false reports about them.

The drama unfolded when Fennich Okyere, Manager of Kwaw Kese, suddenly entered the offices of this paper and requested for a copy of The Saturday Statesman, which had published some people’s views about his client”s rejection and throwing of the Award (a stool) he was given during the recent Arts Critics Reviewers Association of Ghana Awards ceremony onto the floor of TV3 - an Accra-based independent television station.

After receiving a copy of the paper and leaving the premises of The Statesman, Fennich Okyere called the mobile phone of this reporter and made a lot of derogatory statements about her.

He was heard accusing the reporter of being “incompetent” when she criticized Kwaw Kesse for throwing the Award away. He also questioned why she should compare Kwaw Kesse with Batman Samini and describing the “Abodam” – the title of his hit album - man as being intolerant and heartless.

He even went further to warn the sub-editor of the paper to be careful of the stories they write, when the latter intervened by asking what the problem was with regard to the publication. Fennich said his problem was that his name wasn’t spelt correctly, and so demanded for correction. He afterwards used some more choice words on the reporter, sub editor and the Statesman Communications, publishers of The Saturday Statesman.

Readers will recall that in the July 12, 2008 edition of The Saturday Statesman, a story headlined, “KWAW KESE UNDER FIRE”, indicated that this paper went to town to find out from some people how they saw Kwaw Kese’s reaction to the ACRAG Award. The report went as follows:

An ACRAG member, Ernest Abbeyquaye expressed regret at the way Kwaw Kese expressed his sentiments. He explained that ACRAG had problems with sponsorship and that affected some aspects of what it set out to do.

“Some other people have commented that the finishing for the stool was not good enough, but we object to how the young man put his point across. I think that the single act of throwing the award away in the television studio was going overboard to express his displeasure with us.”

Some of his fans also expressed disappointment with his action. To them, he should have at least channeled it through the right authorities instead of dropping it.

Mavis Obeng, who said she was one of Kese’s fans, stressed that “the chap is now misbehaving because the Awards he picked up at the GMA might have gotten into his head so much that he has no respect any more”.

In our previous interview, Mavis had chosen Kwaw instead of Batman Samini; however, she said she was disappointed in Kwaw Kese currently and was turning to a “more reformed” Batman Samini.

Obuor, who also received the same award, expressed surprise at what Kwaw Kese said and cautioned him against such acts in the near future.

In his reaction, Fennic Okchere, Manager of Kwaw Kese, stressed on the same reason Kwaw gave, adding that his client deserved a better plaque, not a wooden object. “I know some of the Award winners are cowards, they don’t want to accept the fact that the Award was bad”, he added.
