The Black Stars of Ghana premiered a new dance for celebrating goals during their match against Morocco in the just-ended Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The dance, called ‘kangaroo dance’ was originally created by Tic Tac and his dance group after releasing his hit-album ‘Accra Connection’ which had the ‘Kangaroo’ track.
In an interview the hiplife icon, Tic Tac said as a committed supporter of the Ghana national team he felt honoured when the Stars decided to dance ‘Kangaroo’.
“Well, even though they didn’t take the ultimate prize the Black Stars are still sons of a Kangaroo,” he stated.
The players all had their styles of jubilating, but the Kangaroo dance just came naturally after they had enjoyed Tic Tac’s hit song.
The Stars players, in an interview, mentioned that the dance was an imitation of Tic Tac’s Kangaroo dance. \Kangaroos are known to come from Australia, but the Black Stars came with the Kangaroo dance on their return from the United Arab Emirates city of Abu Dhabi. According to Portsmouth wonder boy Sulley Muntari, it is always a good feeling to flow with what is in vogue and one which the fans can easily identify with. “I think we’ve tried so many dances but at the moment the Kangaroo is the most fascinating,” he said.
Michael Essien also stated that dancing was a big part of Ghanaian culture and with football, which involves drumming and dancing, it is great to dance after scoring a goal.
Even other teams copied what fans say was “The dance of the tournament”.
Tic Tac’s hit song “Kangaroo” featuring Batman (the king of African dancehall) tells the story of determination; not giving up on one’s dream and having self-belief.
