The high expectations of the hundreds of revellers who thronged the National Theatre on Christmas Eve for the maiden edition of “Ghana Rocks with Ofori Amponsah and Friends” were dashed when the headliner, also known as Mr All 4 Real, failed to move their spirits.
Ofori Amponsah, who has released hit upon hit over the years, was greeted with a standing ovation amidst an uproar of shouts and thunderous applause when he was introduced onto the stage. However, he simply could not hold the expectant audience.
With his carefully selected tracks, which perhaps, he had rehearsed with the live band, he tried with the vim and vigour to move the crowd from their seats but could not succeed as only a few people responded to his performance.
For the about one hour when he performed with the live band backed by two ladies, Ofori Amponsah, who has been noted for not performing well with a live band, moved from one end of the stage to the other without any creativity.
It was when he performed his new hit “Odwo” that he managed to get quite a number of the crowd to respond but even that was not very encouraging. For the rest of the tracks, some of the people responded at the start of the songs but took their seats before he even got to the middle of the songs.
Further, none of the artistes who have been featured on his numerous albums were present to sing their part of the songs, which created what could be termed as gaps in such songs like “Odwo.”
Due to their absence, he had to double as both singer and rapper on songs which he had featured Kofi Nti and Samini, among others.
A number of the patrons who spoke to the TW expressed disappointment about Ofori Amponsah’s performance and wondered why he is not able to stage a good live band performance.
“I expected something lively and different from him but what he gave us, to me, cannot qualify to be a real live band performance,” Eugenia, a fan who was at the concert said.
She said that she has been an ardent fan of Ofori Amponsah for quite some time now but was disappointed about his performance that night, but added “he is good in video clips.”
Another patron, Richard, told the TW: “I can’t understand why the organisers did not invite any of those who have been featured on his songs to sing their part for a big concert like this. I think this brought a heavy burden on his performance”.
Prior to his performance, Daasebre Ahuofe Dwamena, Kofi B and Shasha Marley, Lenny Akpadi, the hottest sensation in gospel music, Kwaw Kesse and the hei alhaji man from Cote d’Ivoire treated the audience with good musical performances which made the audience yearn for more.
Lenny Akpadi opened the curtain for the night with his hit “the Most High God” which seemingly turned the parked auditorium into a praises session in a church auditorium with handkerchief flying all over.
Daasebre Dwamena,Kofi B and Shasha Marley who played with the live band really performed with perfection that one wonders whether it was a live band playing or a compact disk as there appeared to be no difference.
But the man who stole the show, Kwaw Kesse, appeared from behind the audience in Father Christmas attire. He did not only dress as such, but gave away some of his CDs and other gifts to the audience as Christmas presents. His ‘abodam’ slogan, which he has associated himself with was on the lips of all.
The Ghana Rocks show was put together by Charter House Productions in collaboration with Onetouch.

Why should anyone be surprised about this? I have said time and after time, that Ofori Amponsah is only a studio artist. He can’t perform on stage. PERIOD! I have seen his act before. He is nothing to write home about. He is stiff as a board on state and boring. Without the studio equipment and synthesizer, he is nothing. I have advised him many times to practice & improve. But it appears he’s not interested in my advice, may be he’s only interested in selling CD’s.

Ghana celebrates X’mas with Ofori
Amponsah
Ofori AmponsahThis year’s Christmas season witnessed various live musical events throughout the country to mark the celebration of the birth of Christ.
The mother of all the events took place at the National Theatre on Monday December 24, where thousands of Ghanaian and foreign music lovers came to take part in perhaps the biggest show in town, dubbed “Ghana Rocks With Ofori Amponsah and Friends”.
The auditorium of the National Theatre was packed to capacity and music lovers were treated to a wide range of songs and music genre ranging from gospel, hiplife to contemporary highlife.
The main roads from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) headquarters and the Ridge Hospital witnessed heavy traffic, which moved at a pace so slow that many had to park their cars at any available space and make it to the venue on foot.
Most music fans who were late could not get seats and therefore had to stand on their feet till the end of the show. Virtually every available space in the huge auditorium was occupied; not even the extra chairs brought in could solve the problem.
They however did not regret paying the GH¢30 to watch the show, which was splendid and worth the money.
The show, which was well organized, attracted a larger number of music lovers compared to Kojo Antwi’s.
Kojo Antwi, ‘the musicman’, who is known for his annual December 24 musical concert where most of his fans turn up to have a direct feel of him on stage, threw in the towel, giving Ofori the green light on 24 night, for fear that his show would not attract large patronage.
Among the top music giants who performed to the delight and satisfaction of the crowd were Pastor Lenny Akpadie, Kwaw Kese, Becca, Kofi B, Shasha Marley, Daasebre Dwamena, Jeff Bogologobo of ‘Alhaji’ fame and Ofori Amponsah himself.
The show, which started at 8:40 pm and ended at 3:00am, saw music fans on their feet dancing throughout the night.
Pastor Akpadie set the tone for the night when he mounted the stage. The audience could not remain in their seats as they joined him in dancing to his gospel songs. Kofi B received a thunderous applause when he thrilled the audience with some of his latest songs like “Koforidua Flowers” and “Akua Atta”. He opened the floor with one of his biggest hits, “Akua Atta” and had the people rocking on their feet.
Just when “Koforidua Flowers” started playing in the background the crowd began screaming.
Kwaw Kese of ‘Abodam’ fame stole the show with his creative stagecraft as he staged a brilliant performance which sent thousands of fans rolling with him.
He appeared on stage in a Father Christmas outfit and for fifteen minutes, shook the National Theatre amid shouts of “Abodam ooh Abodam” by the audience.
Becca’s stagecraft also won the admiration of fans when she performed her favourite track You Lied To Me and a song by Ofori Amponsah.
She dazzled music fans with her charming personality and dancing skills, making fans wiggle in their seats in appreciation of the performance of the beautiful singer.
Ofori Amponsah, who was the last to perform, brought the whole auditorium to a standstill as both the young and old were seen dancing during his performance.
Ofori performed most of the popular songs on his old and current albums.
Ofori, whose live performances won the hearts of most of the fans, exhibited excellent stagecraft as well as singing and dancing skills.
His appearance on stage was greeted with loud cheers and applause from the audience. One of the unique features of Ofori’s rendition was the quality vocal strength he exhibited throughout his performance.
Majority of fans interviewed indicated that the show was splendid, but some said they were not happy with Daasebre and Kofi B as they lacked stagecraft. They suggested that Ghanaian artistes who lacked stagecraft should be made to undergo formal training in stage performance.

I didn’t see Ofori Amponsah’s show, but I have seen his previous ones and I say this again. The man is a big joke on state. Absolutely no stage talent. I think if you’re an artist and you go into the studio to record a song, you the artist need to visualize yourself on stage, and then decided what instruments go into the production, because again synthesizers will not help in a live performance. Also artists should not feature more than 2 artists in their original songs, because unlike the USA where featured artist can be invited even for 1 minute to do their part, Ghanaian artists usually don’t show up for whatever reason. For example in “Odwo” I expect to see Samini singing live, if I don’t I have every right to be disappointed. I hope they learn well. A word to wise.

now we all know how valuba,e Apietus means to Ofori Amponsah. the studio technology and voice sampling is really helping all 4 real. And, is it me or is all Ofori’s music beginning to sound the same to me? for reaal, they all sound the same. all he does is sing every line in his songs twice and…. thats it. now we all know thaat before a child can run he must first learn to craw and walk. IUts good Mr. Music Man held up his show, now we all know the difference between a musician and an artist. Ofori change your style and practise more on live performance and maybe, u can try to compete with Kojo Antwi one day. love.
