“I didn’t wanna be a part of a movement that I started that I had no control over. They had this little mafia thing going on and they totally isolated the artists. Then I said look, if you gonna eff it up then I don’t wanna be responsible. When people come into this country and ask about hiplife, they come talk to Reggie,” Reggie Rockstone points out flaws in the Hiplife movement.
It’s the first time the Hiplife Grand papa has openly mentioned the word ‘mafia’ in Hiplife. He links it to the pay and play relationship between executive producers, artistes and radio DJs, which is also known as payola. The payola system makes it almost impossible for innovative but poor artists to come out in the lime light. Reggie refers to the payola system as one through which fame is bought by the highest bidder and not by dint of ones ability and musical prowess.
Reggie went on retirement after he realized phoney MCs and clones were polluting the scene. Now he says he’s returning to teach the young kids how the pioneer used to do it. The yet to be named new album from Reggie Rockstone is a double one that contains remixes of his old songs.
Okomfo Kwaade, Mobile Boys and Kwaw Kesse are still on his list of finest Hiplife artists. His new management says the new album will be set for release next year. The albums featured some of Ghana’s greats including Sway and Kwaku T of Big Brother Africa II fame.

I listened to Reggie on Solid Gold Countdown with Pryme eye this past Saturday. He sounded all hyper and overly excited as if he was on some special medication. Reggie and his new Black American manager talked about going into the international market. I’m all for it. He tried it with Beenie Man and failed. I think the competition is now high in Ghana and Reggie is drowning deep. He is no where near the top and I feel his frustration. I really want to see Reggie break into the US music scene like Akon did. He will be the 1st Ghanaian musician to be really accepted my Americans. I wish him all the best.
Reggie Rockstone is a legend when it comes to hiplife. Everyone agrees that he branded hiplife and made it a formidable brand of music in ghana. I remember songs like Keep Your Eyes On The Road, Plan Ben, Mensesa, Sweetie Sweetie. All these songs are classic songs that music lovers and hiplife lovers for that matter identify with as epitomizing the art of Reggie Rockstone. Our generation identified with Reggie when he brought hiplife because it created a vacuum for young people to express themselves hence the wave of artists such as bukbak, vip, akyeame, lord kenya etc. Reggie Rockstone has done a lot for hiplife and has inspired many artists, but i am afraid it is time to lay mantle. Songs like Chuku Chaka and a hosts of other new songs tarnish his image as the grandfather of hiplife. He has now become a part of the problem in hiplife where artist just recite words without having any conscious motive to cause change or inspire people. Reggie i hope this upcoming album is remiscent of the songs you did in the past not what you have been doing lately. With that said I sincerely hope that your mission of sharing hiplife with the world pans out. You introduced hiplife to ghana, therefore it is fitting for you to share it with the world.
who ever say anything against him.do ya know hiplife.do you think hiplife is castro, vip and etc are doing. this jama shit.beat with no messages.hiplife is dead.-if yall dont know.all the original artist are all dead.where is obrafour.how can hiplife be about only love songs.how can someone buy an album to listen only 13 tracks about love .fulll bullshit.no lyrical content.yall prazing mizbel, castro ,kokoveli, when they cant even spit 8 bars.u made lord kenya act a fool.trying to change to yall style.fuck the djs, cant even listen to radio anymore.same old shit.same method of playing.party tracks only.yall need more people ,we dont believe yall.i saw jore frazier song about these killings in ghna, but it never got promotion.why.foolz.hiplife is dead.jama is done.is time we come back n show them
AAAA does this clown think he tough. Am talking to you GD. If you think Reggie Rockstone’s going to resurrect hiplife tell him to make a quality songs. Chuku Chaka is not cutting it, he has become a part of the problem. And how dare you criticize obrafour, I have respect for Reggie but there is no way you can compare Obrafour to Reggie. Lyrically Reggie is not in Obrafour’s league. The mark of a great artist is when others use your line. GD i would recommend you listen to most rappers today and realize how much the steal words from obrafour. Obrafour decision to do love songs on his latest album was strictly a business move, besides that he had songs like Wootepuupu and Hwan Na which show his lyrical skill. Right now hiplife is on life support but i sincerely hope Reggie doesnt kill it.
hiplife without the mentioning of reggies name is like reggae without bob marley.respect the legend and give thanks to his vision which paved the way for many artists who would have been goat-headers to see the light.payola needs to stop to make way for real artists..yall check real hiplife on ma page.its a take over.www.myspace.com/papapharoh.jah guide.

I have been waiting to hear another dumb rant from GD. You have come through and i can do nothing but laugh. Please Mr. GD if you are on weed please get off of it cuss its really impairing your thinking. First of all i have always recognized Rockstone as a legend but my point was that his stuff lately has been weak. Have you noticed that when you were listing his songs you only listed those he did in the past. You didnt include chuku chaka or any of the weak stuff he has recently come up with. If you want to know my favorite Rockstone joints are Mensesa with Mensa, NightLife in Accra, Where Am From, Keep Your Eyes On The Road. A couple of these songs didnt really make it on the airwaves so if i knew nothing about hiplife i would not know about them. Also i never said anything about the dirtysouth helping hip-hop so i dont know where that line came from, i suspect it has something to do with the ntampe. I would agree that the quality of hiplife music has gone down but that doesnt mean you cant criticize reggie for contributing with the weak stuff he has been doing lately.
