He came onto the Ghanaian hip-life music scene on a very high key note with his debut “Damages” in 2003, and managed to endear himself to the hearts of many music fans in a very short time.
Four years on and after three successive hit albums in his musical career, the Takoradi native, Castro De Destroyer, is about to stun hip-life enthusiasts, especially his fans, with his new project (surprise-surprise), a gospel album!- early next year.
The 10-track album, he told The Spectator, is to show appreciation to God for the wonderful things He has done in his life, and for bringing him to where he finds himself today. “I want to prove to people that God has done something big for me,” he said, adding, “God almighty Jah has done a lot for me and the best way to let people know what he has done for me is through this music.”
Speaking to The Spectator from a recording studio in Accra on Tuesday, he said “God has given me a message for the people. That is, he’s a wonderful God and as such we have to praise him for what he has done and continues doing”.
He said that he has started recording the album titled “Dea Onyame Ahyira No, Atanfo Ntumi Nsae No,” (translated as “Who Jah Bless, No One Curse”). It has tracks like “Ebe Yeyie” and “Otiasifuor Ye Kwa”
He explained that the album underscores the fact that “with God everything is possible; that no matter what you do, or where you’re from, you can do or become whatever you want to.”
Castro, who spoke like a preacher, said it is important that as a people we remain steadfast in God and should “have vigour for prayers. Don’t think if you are a drunkard you’ll be drunkard forever. With God everything is possible”.
On where he derives his lyrics from, he said “the songs come by themselves. Music is in me and it is in my family: my mother sings in church and the great gospel duo, the Tagoe Sisters, are my aunties.
Question: Is that the end of his hip-life career? The man described by his fans as Ghana’s 50 Cent, replied, “No!” Indeed, he says, “I’ll come out with a hip-life album two or three months after the release of the gospel”.
He dismissed claims that hip-life is not adequately gaining international reputation because of the Ghanaian languages used. He said “It is not about singing in English. It is about promotion” citing the example of the late Fela of Nigeria who did most of his songs in local language and yet gained international attention and recognition.
Is Castro married? He said “I am not married but seriously engaged.” When is the big day? He says “I’m putting one or two things together to go and see her family and take her to the altar. Whatever happens, “by next year, I will marry” but he adds quickly, “By the grace of God”.
The “Sa kwa ba” man, known in real life as Theophilus Tagoe, was motivated and pushed into music by V.I.P after they discovered him perform at an event. His style of rap in Twi, Ga and Fante, and his ability to sing, rap, dance and to perform with live band has gained him much fame.
His works have won him a number of awards at the Ghana Music Award and from Ghanaians resident in the United Kingdom. He has been nominated as the “African Best New Act” at the third Annual Black Music Awards in Cotonou, Benin, scheduled for November 30 and December 1. He is expected to perform two of his hit tracks at the event.

Another scheme to make money from the masses..this is not making sense..Let me tell y’all the truth..Proven statistics has shown that gospel music sell more records than any other music in Ghana at the moment..And it’s obvious hiplife has lost his focus since they are got nothing to talk about than sex and women..I mean the masses, including urself and i are tired of hearing the same old mediocre songs castro and the rest they have been singing..So wht is next?Make a quick move to gospel, get some bible quoatations and verses, put in some lazy and mediocre hook as usual and thts it.. it’s on the radio..And some knuckleheads who are not enlightened about music and business are gonna fall for it..Let’s set the record straight,CASTRO WANTS TO MAKE MONEY..he’s not so much interested in the spreading of the message..And the irony is,the message one way or the other get across bcuz his name is gonna sell the album not for any “spiritual reason” which carry the message with respect to gospel music..
POOR CASTRO..POOR HIPLIFERS..GOD is WATCHING..
hey onye u hav 2 say sumfin encourageous dan sayin all these trash man..wht is god watchin?wha r u tryin 2 do judgin or sumfin?man cum on…encourage him yh and 4get aba him makin money, all gospel artise mkes money as well and no one is perfect in dis world bruv….say sumfin better onye
I definitely agree with Onye, i mean come on Dee do you honestly think Castro is trying to save lives by releasing this album. Throughout the period that Castro has been making songs, is there anything positive or encouraging that he said in his lyrics. His lyrics is always about one thing and am not sure it is preached on Sunday sermons. There is no doubt that this is aimed at making money, and it saddens me that Castro will stoop to that level. If he truly wanted to express God’s influence on his life then he would have proclaimed that he is now a gospel musician. Lets not kid ourselves this same guy is now wanted by police in connection with the murder of a human being. The sad thing about this is that people are going to buy this album, and it is not because they want their lives to be changed.
cum on nana b…police want him to help dem investigate cus he was in de club at dat time..dat dusnt means he was part of de crime….cum on man…lets encourage him and see what he cums out with…..wen he was been interviewed he said a drunkard will na be a drunkard 4ever…..so lets see wha he’s got man…be encouragerous nana b
dis unbelieveable CASTRO if u wanted GOD 2 no wat he’s done.u dt need 2 change from hip pop 2 gospel cos da LORD is everywhere remember dat.u can do ue thin n thanks da LORD @da same time.
Castro from hip pop 2 gropel n wats next reggae.stick to 1 thing cos da gospel was there b4 u went 2 sing HIP POP.God is still by ur side so changin will nt help
I can clearly see how some people really would never get enlightened with certain issues..Dee,I am no way hating on Castro,i personally like the toffee song not for anything but the beat.the production on the song is excellent compared to what i hear most of the time..Listen to the song in context, word to word, line to line and lyric to lyric. And try listen to the “sikilite” track he did with 4X4..It was all sexual-suggestive songs not to talk of the songs he’s done with mzbel(who’s almost turning into a ho)..Why the sudden switch to gospel when he’s preached nothing but sex which is “un-gospel” to say with respect to the message of God..I am no way judging castro but read the interview again,he says he’s gonna come back to hiplife which means after all the what-not is gonna sing about in the gospel songs,he would still comeback to hiplife and sing about women and sex, only if he’s got any other thing to talk about..THIS IS A BIG BUSINESS..Close ur eyes and open ur mind..What you see is not always real..Like naa said, castro don’t necessarily have to switch to gospel to let the world know what God has done for him..
hmmmm ..ok ohhhh onye
Onye, I’m with you all the way. I think your comments are very close to the truth. Many people just don’t like to hear the truth for whatever reason. Even though we all have equal opportunity to express ourselves, people just like to attack you for speaking your mind. I’ve always appreciated the strong moral culture that Ghana has, unfortunately, the new generation has decided to dump all that into the toilet and adopt the trash from the west. However, hey, we will continue to speak our minds.
ONYE AND RIKI I TOTALLY AGREE WITH U BOTH CASTRO SHOULD JUST STICK WITH HIP-LIFE BECAUSE I CANNOT SEE THE MAN DOING SO WELL ON THE GOSPEL SCENE. HE IS PURE AND TRUE HIP-LIFE AND SHOULD JUST STICK IN THE HIP-LIFE SCENE. BUT I DO AGREE WITH DEE THOUGH A LITTLE BIT. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THIS. CASTRO JUST STICK TO HIP-LIFE ONLY BUT IF YOU WANT TO DO THIS GOSPEL ALBUM THAN BE MY GUESS. WE GHANAIANS SHOULD NOT JUDGE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS BUT WE SHOULD JUDGE OURSELVES.
AAAAAAAH
dis is unbeliverble Awurade Nyakopon
this is weird y change to gospel all of a suddenly. u dont need to sing a gospel song to show appreciation to God. he is always there with us. i love castro and everything but i think he just using this as a way to make more money. just like wat the others do. my advice is he shud atick to one thing and not many.
