Stanley Nyame, a.k.a DJ Abio, programs manager of Channel R has come out strongly to defend the pay and play system in the radio industry popularly known as ‘payola’.
He said problems facing the music industry are mainly caused by piracy and not payola. DJ Abio sees payola as a positive factor on the music scene and thinks payola plays an important role in music promotion.
“We are talking about promotion here not just playing the songs. If I go to the library and I want to play very good songs, I can just select any of the songs there, nice ones, and come and present. I will be doing listeners good but then I will be killing musicians because I won’t take my time to promote the song,” DJ Abio explained.
Asked why Ghana is yet to celebrate a big gospel hit this year, DJ Abio told Showghana.com that most of the producers have decided to stay off production. “The only producer around now is Big Ben and Kaakyire later came in,” he said. He said payola is not as much a problem to the producers as piracy.
DJ Abio hosts ‘Total Entertainment’ code named 205 on Channel R and has been a key member of the selection committee of Ghana Music Awards.
He’s made no secret of the fact that he takes payola and has said until proper structures are put in place on the Ghanaian music scene, producers, musicians and radio presenters would have no choice but to deal in payola.

I listened to his bum this saturday on SGC with Pryme Eye. I was very sadened with this bum. Trying to justify his misdeed. Rex Omar said it all. DJ Abio is using someone’s medium, in this case the radio station which doesn’t even belong to him to make money for himself. What is the radio station getting? Does he Abio give the radio station which pay his salary some of the payola money? This man is a thief. He is enriching himself with someone else’s sweat, both the musician and also the radio station. He should be arrested. After all payola is illigal.
i feel what you are saying riki but he does have a point payola isn’t killing sales its the bootleggers and hiplifers them self if you dont bring up a good product nobody is going to buy it
Sorry but what a moron. You mean playing music that you LIKE is bad? Give me a break, if a DJ only plays good music then the new musicians that want to get played only need to MAKE GOOD MUSIC. This guy is a total asshole to say this. I can’t even believe what I am hearing. This is doublespeak.
this dj abio guy is a waste of time. on a christian radio station too. thats ghana for you, the greatest ambiguities. if he wants to promote people he should be a promoter, not a radio presenter. SAY NO TO PAYOLA. granted, the pirates do mess the industry up, but so does payola. you only get pirated after you have a big hit anyways…
During the SGC show, i heard Abio try to justify his thievery behaviour by saying it was rather the producers who were constantly harassing his to take payola. But let me ask Abio this, did the producers tie him up with rope and shoved the payola money in his pocket? I don’t think so. Besides if He was a good citizen, and he knows payola is illigal, then it is his duty to gather the neccesasry evidence and report the matter to the police and have those so-called producers arrested, but not to encourage them by taking the payola. Abio, i pray you change your ways.
Hey, DJ Abio. In the first wave of anger I experience jus
t by reading someone thinks there is a positive side to payola I was gonna insult you. But I do not want to come down to your level. Piracy, payola are both destroying our industry. Good artists can’t come out with their songs if they don’t bribe DJs . It may be positive or ou since it fills up your pockets. Have some respect for yourself and Ghanaian musicians!
