A saddened death occurred last week of yet another showbiz personality who goes by the name David Laryea Afortey a.k.a. Apor the Executive Director of Prince Dave Group of Companies on July 2007 at the Trust Hospital Osu after a short illness. He was 44.
Apor will probably be best remembered for his contribution to the music industry, having produced the likes of Ananu Shakar, Latifa & Anansewaa (LA), Pope Skinny, 4×4, Bright of Buk Bak fame and Castro d’Destroyer. Until his untimely death he was on the verge of signing on Sydney and two other gospel artists. With the gospel divas he has concluded the deal with them for the commencement of the project. He also managed some soccer icons like Don Bortey among others.
So what killed this selfless, generous and philanthropist, if one may asked? Well a source close to the family revealed to your authoritative Weekly Fylla that Apor, who has almost completed his Nite Club and the Joint in front of his plush office off Nungua (Prince Dave Plaza) C-5 road for a grand launching during this Homowo had been in critical condition with jaundice complications for sometime now but surely not the type that should have sent him to his grave. His death had not been a pleasant one to the family and they suspect foul play.
According to the source it was unusual for the man to work on holidays but the day in question Apor went to the Shinning Beach near Coco Beach, Nungua to inspect a project he was undertaken there and went ahead to pay off the workers. It was revealed to the Weekly Fylla later that the mason, one Mr. Prosper working on the project was also attacked by a strange ailment that saw him hospitalized but it did not occur to anybody to critically analyzed the situation both physically and spiritually.
So on that faithful Monday after paying the workers he decided to relax on his Cann Bed around where the people he was with were drinking and playing cards. “He then complained of drowsiness and wanted to relax in his vehicle. All we saw was blood oozing freely from his mouth and nose.” The source revealed.
“He was rushed to Narh-Bitah Hospital in Tema but they referred him to the Tema General Hospital.” He said.
There was only one doctor available at the time we got there so it took some time for him to attend to him. By this time his condition has stabilized with his usual comics and chatting with friends and family. It was also discovered that he went to bath and visited the toilet all by himself.
The next day in his attempt to visit the toilet he fell and it aggravated the situation as he vomited blood once again. He was once gain transferred to the Trust Hospital (SSNIT) at Osu for better medication and attention. He was ‘oxygenized” till he met his untimely death on 5th July 2007.
It is said a day before the incident occurred at the Beach he had taken pictures with all his kids and some family people. “He kept on mentioning a particular name to the extent that, that person (name withheld) wants to kill him and none of us took him serious and he died just like that”. With tears flowing on his cheeks.
Apor was born David Nii Afortey Laryea also known in the showbiz as Prince Dave Records in 1964, 13th July to Kantamanso Chief Nii Otu Akwetey and Madam Elizabeth Laryea. He is the brother of Hon. Nii Afortey Laryea also the MP for Kpone Katamanso. He left behind two wives Auntie Naa and Sister Joyce and five kids, two boys Nii Ago and Nii Otu. He attended all his education at Teshie Salem School.
