May be for artistes like Kwaku Gyasi at this year’s Ghana Music Awards (GMA) it had to be the Most Popular Song Award at the Ghana Music Awards or nothing else.
So even though he received three awards, he thought that was not enough. He had to take home the ultimate too.
He certainly had his hopes shattered because a whole month after the GMA event, Kwaku Gyasi still talks about his disappointment for not hooking the big fish.
He even expresses his shock at the award going to King Ayisoba instead.
Talking to Graphic Showbiz last week, Kwaku Gyasi said he was very sure he was going to take the ultimate prize this year.
“I was 100 per cent sure that my name would be mentioned for the Most Popular Song of the Year Award. No gospel musician has ever received the Most popular Song of the Year Award ever since the awards started in 2000 and I strongly believed I would break that jinx but to my disappointment it went to King Ayisoba and I couldn’t believe it”.
“I thought I would win with my song Onyame Aseda but that didn’t happen. What can I say? Nothing because it has been given to him already”, he said.
Kwaku Gyasi said he had everything to break that record.
I mean I had what it takes to grab that award but things didn’t work well as I expected. I don’t know whether it is the perception of the organisers or the general public that no gospel musician will ever win that award”, he said.
Kwasi Gyasi who won Gospel Song of the Year, Gospel Album of the Year and Gospel Artiste of Year awards said when his name was not mentioned; he expected Ofori Amponsah or Samini to receive it.
“I was really shocked when King Ayisoba’s name was mentioned to take the award.”
Asked why he was shocked to hear King Ayisoba’s name and Kwaku Gyasi said the former’s song did not receive as much air- play as his album and those of Ofori Amponsah and Samini.
He suggested that the organisers should separate gospel music awards from the other music awards. “A lot of gospel musicians come out with hits but only a few are selected when for the GMA”.
He said he is already working on a new album which will be out by the end of the year. He thanked all his fans for voting for him as well as the elders of his church who supported him with prayers to get the three awards.
