The organisers, Solid Events Agency, narrowly escaped being attacked by patrons, mainly students, who thronged the Sunyani Centre for National Culture to watch the “One Touch Miss S-Poly” held last week.
Irate patrons of the event accused the executive of the Students Representative Council (SRC) and Solid Events Agency, based in Kumasi, for deceiving them after several weeks of intensive radio publicity that promised that three top hiplife artistes, K.K. Fosu, Batman Samini and Castro were going to perform on the night of event.
After realising that their favourite artists were not going to turn up, patrons turned on the organisers for an explanation. But for the timely intervention of security personnel the SRC executive particularly the President, Ernest Affram and the GNUPS local President Alhassan Mohamed would have been assaulted.
The agitation of the crowd affected the entire programme and the Master of Ceremony, Kwame Adinkra of Angel FM walked off the stage to register his displeasure with the event organizers.
Some of the aggrieved students said the SRC deliberately decided to dupe the students and the people of Sunyani that was why they arranged for some military personnel to provide security.
The students referred to a report in Graphic Showbiz in which the organisers said that all the 10 selected contestants had toured some interested places such as the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, Lake Bosomtwe, Kintampo Water Falls and Obuasi Mines, and said that it was false.
The major drama unfolded after the winner of the beauty pageant was announced and crowned. The winner, Mary Owusu Boateng, who should have had a joyful moment, rather faced an angry crowd of students who described her victory as a stolen verdict.
The crown, ¢1million cash prize, a table top refrigerator, an airticket(Sunyani-Accra-Sunyani) and the mobile phone, which were supposed to be her prize, were all confiscated by the SRC who promised to conduct a probe into the pageant.
Some of the aggrieved students questioned the credibility of Solid Events Agency.Onetouch, sponsors of the event had their share of the accusations, for allowing themselves to be used by an entertainment agency, which according to the students had doubtful origins.
The students threatened to drag the SRC of Sunyani Polytechnic to court for what they described as breach of contract and deceit of the students and the people of Sunyani who saved their last pesewa to catch a glimpse of their favorite hiplife artists, particularly Batman Samini who was to have had his maiden performance in Sunyani.
